WIC Update

WIC has returned to in-office appointments.

WIC will also now be requiring recent weights, heights, and hemoglobin results at certain WIC appointments. If a weight, height, or hemoglobin hasn't been obtained by the participant's provider, an in-person appointment will be made available so this can be obtained in our office.

WHO WE ARE

WIC is the supplemental food assistance program for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is designed to promote health and prevent nutrition related health problems by providing nutrition education, breastfeeding information and referrals. Families who participate also receive an eWIC card that they can use to purchase healthy foods at the grocery store.

Who is Eligible?

Connecticut families who's household income is below current limits, families that have a child under the age of five, women who are either pregnant or recently delivered, and families who can demonstrate a nutrition related risk or need. Those who apply will need to demonstrate eligibility by coming to the office to show documentation as well as meet with a nutritionist for assessment.

SHOPPING WITH WIC

If you're either new to WIC, or using the eWIC card for the first time, it can be confusing to know what foods are WIC approved, and how to use the card. Here are some tips on shopping using your eWIC card.

FAMILY BENEFITS LIST

Every time we load benefits on your card in the WIC clinic, we will print out a Family Benefits List for you. This will show show you what foods are available on your current food package, when you can use each month of benefits, and when you're due for an appointment.

CHECK YOUR BALANCE

Checking your balance before you start shopping will help prevent confusion at checkout.  You can check your balance by looking at your receipt from your most recent WIC purchase, using the My Benefits feature in the WIC Shopper app, you can call 1-855-222-0510 to get your balance over the phone, or create an account on the EBT website here.

WIC SHOPPER

There's an app called WIC shopper that you can download on your smart phone or tablet.  The app has special features to make shopping easier:

  • Scan Barcode: use this by scanning the barcode of the item to verify if an item is WIC approved.

  • My Benefits: use this to check your balance.

  • New WIC Food Guide: Check this to see the full descriptions of all WIC eligible items (not every item listed will be available for every WIC participant, check My Benefits to see what your are eligible for).

  • Cereal Calculator: Use this to calculate your eligibility for cereal.

  • I Couldn't Buy This: Fill out the form in this feature to alert the state WIC office of a problem or potential problem with WIC items at the store.

  • My Appointments: See when your next appointment is scheduled.

  • WIC Stores: Use the GPS on your phone to find WIC stores near you.

REPORT A PROBLEM

Don't wait until your next WIC appointment to report an issue.  If you're unable to get a WIC food item at the store, or would like to file a complaint about a WIC vendor, let us know.  You can call us at the WIC office, or use the WIC Shopper App and click on the "I couldn't buy this" button.

To access WIC Smart go to www.wicsmart.com or download the WIC Smart app on your smart phone or tablet. To login use the account number provided by your WIC nutritionist.
